New Delhi/Alive News: The Election Commission has revised the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in six states, giving voters additional time to file claims and objections. Under the revised timeline, the final electoral rolls in five states, including Maharashtra, will be published on November 30, while Delhi’s final voter list will be released on December 22.

The changes follow the Supreme Court’s observations on the need to provide sufficient time to voters whose names may have been omitted. On October 28, the court questioned the urgency of completing the exercise when no elections were scheduled in the states concerned.

Delhi, Maharashtra get additional time

In Delhi, the deadline for filing claims and objections has been extended from October 30 to November 25. The deadline for disposing of claims has been moved from November 30 to December 15, while the final electoral roll will be published on December 22.

In Maharashtra, voters can now file claims and objections until November 13, instead of October 26. The process of issuing notices and resolving claims will continue until November 25, and the final list will be published on November 30.

Deadlines revised in four other states

In Andhra Pradesh and Haryana, the deadline for issuing notices and resolving claims has been extended to November 20. In Nagaland, the process will continue until November 25, while Telangana has been given time until November 26. The final electoral rolls in all four states will be published on November 30.

SIR to cover most of the country

The Election Commission has said the SIR exercise will eventually cover the country, with Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh remaining outside the current schedule. The timeline for these regions will be announced later, citing weather conditions and the census.

According to the Election Commission, around 59 crore voters were covered in the first two phases of the revision. The exercise involved approximately 6.3 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and 9.2 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs).
