Delhi/Alive News: Around 80 Delhi Police personnel protested outside the police headquarters on Monday against the transfer of an ACP and an inspector in East Delhi following a clash with lawyers. The protesting personnel termed the action unjustified and said it had affected the morale of the force.
The protest began outside Gate No. 1 of the police headquarters, where personnel raised slogans demanding the reinstatement of the two officers to their previous postings. Several senior officers reached the spot and tried to persuade them to call off the protest.
DCP (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma also arrived and urged the personnel not to behave like protesters and to move inside the headquarters. However, they refused to withdraw.
Messages had reportedly been circulated in a Delhi Police WhatsApp group, calling on personnel to gather at the headquarters in support of the transferred officers. DCPs and unit heads across districts had also been directed to ensure that their staff did not participate in the proposed protest.
The transfers involve ACP Vashisht, who was posted in the Gandhi Nagar subdivision, and Arun Kumar, inspector at Shahdara police station. Both were transferred following an incident at the police station on October 23, when a lawyer sustained a serious head injury during a scuffle.
Following the incident, lawyers at the district court launched an indefinite strike, demanding action against the officers concerned. They called off the strike on October 28 after the transfer orders were issued.
The transfers triggered resentment among some police personnel, who wanted to meet the police commissioner and raise concerns over the action against their colleagues.
