Azam Khan Sent to 14-Day Judicial Custody After ED Arrest

National/Alive News: Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody by a Ghaziabad court following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur.

The ED arrested Khan on Saturday evening, shortly after he was released from Rampur jail, where he had spent nearly 11 months. On Sunday, the agency produced him before a special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The court approved the ED’s request for 14 days of judicial custody.

Following the court order, Khan was taken to Dasna jail in Ghaziabad. Security was tightened around the court, with nearly 100 police and paramilitary personnel deployed. Five ED vehicles arrived at the court complex around 10.30 am.

When journalists asked Khan if he had anything to say as he was brought to the court, he briefly replied, “What is left to say?”

The case relates to alleged misuse of government funds in the construction of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. The university is run by a trust founded and controlled by Khan.

In a provisional attachment order dated October 28, the ED attached land and buildings linked to the university, with an estimated current market value of ₹1,170 crore. The agency has also alleged that the university trust received donations from non-genuine sources, allegedly under the political influence of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Abbas Haider termed Khan’s arrest politically motivated and accused the BJP-led state government of using central agencies against him. These allegations have been made by the party and have not been established as facts.

The arrest comes ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had met Khan in Rampur jail on October 22.
