Odisha Emerges as First Choice to Host 2030 Hockey World Cups

Sports/Alive News: Odisha, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have emerged as the leading contenders to host the men’s and women’s FIH Hockey World Cups in 2030, Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh said on Friday. He indicated that Odisha would be the preferred choice, citing its experience in hosting major international tournaments.

“Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Punjab are all in the race. Odisha will be the first preference,” Singh told PTI, adding that hosting the World Cup again would be a significant achievement for the state.

Odisha has hosted the men’s Hockey World Cup twice, while Tamil Nadu organised the men’s Junior World Cup last year in Chennai and Madurai. Punjab, known for its rich hockey tradition, has never hosted the senior World Cup. The state is currently hosting the men’s Asian Champions Trophy, its first international hockey tournament in 17 years.

India has hosted the men’s Hockey World Cup four times but is yet to stage the women’s edition.

Singh said Hockey India’s objective was to expand the sport’s reach across the country and develop international-standard infrastructure. The Women’s Asian Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, from November 19 to 28, marking another step towards expanding hockey’s geographical footprint.

Explaining Punjab’s selection for the ongoing tournament, Singh said the state has contributed significantly to the national team, and local families deserve opportunities to watch Indian players compete internationally.

On reports that Mandeep Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas and Nilakanta Sharma could be playing their farewell tournament, Singh clarified that such decisions were not made by Hockey India. He said fit and capable players would continue to be considered.

Singh also expressed confidence in both national teams ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics, saying the target was to reach the final and improve India’s medal performance.
