Manipur/Alive News: Two people were killed and four others injured in a fresh incident of violence in Manipur on Monday. The incident took place when a group of people went to a forest near the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts to collect firewood. Following the killings, angry locals brought a body and left it outside Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh’s residence in Imphal, prompting security personnel to use tear gas to disperse the protesters.
The deceased have been identified as Arubam Ronil, 35, and Lairenlakpam Inaobi, 51. According to officials, a group of 16 people had gone to the hills near their village at around 7 am to collect firewood when they were allegedly attacked by armed militants. Four people were injured in the firing, while three others were reported missing.
The incident occurred in the Khongbal Sunurok Uyok area of Kangpokpi district, a short distance from Nongshum village in Imphal East. The alleged attack triggered anger among local residents, who carried the bodies towards the Chief Minister’s residence to protest against the killings.
Security personnel deployed outside the residence fired several rounds of tear gas shells to control the situation and disperse the crowd. The bodies were later taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal. It was not immediately clear whether the Chief Minister was present at his residence during the protest.
