Mumbai/Alive News: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating an alleged cyber fraud in which a woman from Goa was threatened with “digital arrest” and forced to transfer ₹2.60 crore to multiple bank accounts. According to the agency, Goa Police registered an FIR on June 9, 2025. The alleged fraud took place between May 21 and June 2, 2025.
The ED told the court that Upadhyay was a key link in the suspected fraud network. The agency alleges that after bank accounts connected to the network were frozen following police complaints, the accused bribed officials to get them reopened.
The alleged bribe money was reportedly transferred through the Angadiya network, an informal system used to move cash.
Money Routed Through Around 400 Accounts
According to the ED, the money taken from the woman was transferred into around 400 mule bank accounts linked to companies dealing in commodities, travel and foreign exchange.
Investigators allege that these companies were operated using fake directors to hide the identities of those controlling them. The money was later withdrawn in cash and converted into foreign currency through money changers licensed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The ED is investigating the alleged transactions and the role of people suspected of helping move the fraud proceeds through multiple accounts and business entities.
