Retired Army Captain Arrested in Tamil Nadu in Suspected Honeytrap Case; Accused of Sharing Confidential Information

National/Alive News: A 52-year-old retired Army captain has been arrested in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu for allegedly sharing confidential military information with an unidentified woman through WhatsApp. The accused, identified as Babu, served in the Indian Army for 28 years before retiring last year.

According to police, Babu is a resident of Keezhvallam village near Kaniyambadi in Vellore district. He retired from the Army’s Equipment Division with the rank of captain and had been living in his village since leaving service.

Woman Allegedly Contacted Him on WhatsApp

According to preliminary information, an unidentified woman contacted Babu on WhatsApp around a year ago. Investigators suspect that she first developed a personal relationship with him through inappropriate conversations and later began asking for information related to the Indian Army and its equipment.

Babu allegedly shared the requested details with her. When he did not have certain information, he reportedly contacted Army offices to obtain it before forwarding it to the woman.

Intelligence Agencies Questioned the Accused

Army officials reportedly became suspicious of his activities and questioned him with assistance from central intelligence agencies. The investigation allegedly indicated that he had been sharing military-related information with the woman for about a year.

Intelligence officials detained Babu for questioning on October 23. He was subsequently handed over to Vellore Rural Police on the night of October 24. Police have registered a case and are investigating the allegations.

Woman’s Identity Under Investigation

Investigators are attempting to identify the woman and establish who operated the WhatsApp account. They are also examining whether any foreign individual or organisation was involved in obtaining the information.

The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against the retired officer have not yet been established in court.
