The Suicide’ organized at JC Bose University tickled the audience

Faridabad/Alive News: J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, came alive with laughter and satire as the Department of Communication and Media Technology, in collaboration with Mad One Theatre, presented “The Suicide,” a modern adaptation of the Russian black comedy by Nikolai Erdman. The play, which was staged in the Vivekanand Auditorium, garnered enthusiastic applause from students, faculty, and staff.

“The Suicide,” originally written in 1928, found a fresh and engaging interpretation in the hands of Mad One Theatre, a Delhi-based theatre group, led by director Saif Ansari. This adaptation skillfully transplanted Erdman’s social comedy into the Indian political landscape, creating a hilarious and thought-provoking spectacle.

At the heart of the play is Samyon, affectionately known as Sam, portrayed brilliantly by Saif Ansari. Sam, a young and unemployed man, humorously attempts to escape his woes by learning to play the tuba. When his plan inevitably crumbles, he contemplates suicide, unwittingly becoming a pawn in a game of exploitation orchestrated by his neighbor, Alexander Petrovich.

While “The Suicide” promises an evening of laughter and entertainment, it subtly invites viewers to reflect on pressing global issues. The play balances humor and political commentary, ensuring that the audience leaves with smiles on their faces and questions in their minds. Mad One Theatre’s adaptation of “The Suicide” is a testament to the power of theatre to entertain, provoke, and engage. It serves as a reminder that even in laughter, there can be profound lessons to learn. Back-to-back two shows of the play were organised in the University and remained successful.
