Supreme Court Halts Suspension of Kuldeep Sengar’s Life Sentence in Unnao Minor Rape Case

Delhi/Alive News: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the order of the Delhi High Court that had suspended the life sentence of expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case involving a minor girl. With this order, Sengar will remain in jail and will not be released under any circumstances until further hearing.

Advocate Mehmood Pracha, representing the Unnao rape survivor, said the Supreme Court’s decision has provided some relief to the victim. However, he clarified that it should not be seen as a complete victory. Pracha stated that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) argued the case on very limited points and did not raise the strongest grounds available in favor of the victim. He also alleged that the CBI did not consult the victim’s side or make them a party in the case. According to him, there is substantial evidence supporting the victim, and the court has not yet examined the main merits of the case.

Meanwhile, Hemant Kumar Maurya, another advocate from the victim’s side, welcomed the Supreme Court’s order and thanked the court on behalf of the survivor. He said the Supreme Court has passed a strong order clearly stating that the accused will not be released from jail. The court has granted time to the opposing side to file a counter-affidavit, and until then, the Delhi High Court’s order has been stayed.

The Supreme Court’s intervention ensures that Kuldeep Singh Sengar continues to serve his life sentence while the matter remains under consideration.
