National/Alive News: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in six states and Union Territories. The exercise will cover Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Mizoram, Odisha and Sikkim.
The revision aims to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the voter lists, with special attention to young and first-time voters. The draft electoral rolls will be published on November 30, while the final voter lists are scheduled to be released on January 21, 2027.
The exercise will also allow advance applications from people who will turn 18 and become eligible to vote on April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027.
What Is Special Summary Revision?
Special Summary Revision is a process of updating existing electoral rolls. It includes adding the names of newly eligible voters, correcting errors and updating voters’ personal details and addresses.
Unlike the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which involves detailed verification through door-to-door visits, SSR focuses on updating the existing electoral roll.
Revision Already Announced in 17 States and UTs
Earlier, on October 15, the Election Commission announced SSR in 17 states and Union Territories, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Goa and Uttarakhand.
These states are scheduled to publish their draft voter lists on November 12, while the final electoral rolls will be released on January 4, 2027. Several of these states are due to hold Assembly elections in 2027.
EC Directs States to Arrange Necessary Resources
The Election Commission has directed the chief secretaries of the concerned states and Union Territories to ensure adequate staff and resources for the revision process. The aim is to complete the exercise within the prescribed timeline and ensure that eligible voters are not left out of the electoral rolls.
