Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement from International Football After 23 Years with Portugal

Sports/Alive News: Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his 23-year career with Portugal. The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision through a video message on social media.

Ronaldo scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, finishing his international career as the highest goal scorer in men’s international football. He also helped his country win three major international trophies.

In his farewell message, Ronaldo said, “Portugal will always be in me.” He also thanked the Portuguese people and said it was time to hand back the national team’s iconic No. 7 shirt.

Three Major Titles with Portugal

Ronaldo made his international debut against Kazakhstan on August 20, 2003, at the age of 18. During his career, he helped Portugal win the 2016 UEFA European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Portugal defeated France 1-0 in the Euro 2016 final. Ronaldo was forced to leave the match due to an injury, but his team went on to lift the trophy after Eder scored the winning goal.

Historic World Cup Records

Ronaldo represented Portugal in six World Cups, starting with the 2006 tournament in Germany. He also became the first player to score in six different editions of the competition.

He played 27 World Cup matches and scored 11 goals. However, winning the World Cup remained an unfulfilled ambition. Portugal’s best performance during his career came in 2006, when the team finished fourth.

Ronaldo Continues His Club Career

Ronaldo will continue playing for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr despite retiring from international football.

He is also approaching the landmark of 1,000 career goals. With 985 goals in 1,343 senior appearances for club and country, he is just 15 goals away from the milestone.
