Awareness workshop on “Sexual Harassment” holds in YMCA

With a view to empower women against sexual harassment, The Women Cell of YMCA University of Science and Technology, Faridabad in collaboration with MOB- the alumni association of the University, organised an awareness workshop on “Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace: Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal Act, 2013”.

                 Mr. O P Sharma, former Vice- Chairman of Bar Council Punjab and Haryana was the Chief Guest and keynote speaker of the occasion. The workshop was also addressed by Dr. Alok Deep,former Professor from Nehru College  who  enlightened the audience with the meaning of “sexual harassment” and also briefed  about the responsibilities, principles, functioning of a ‘Women Sexual Harassment Cell’. She also shared her experiences of closely working with Gramin Aanchal and NGOs and took the spirit of the young audience to new heights.

                In his keynote address, Mr O.P Sharma focussed on various aspects of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace: Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal Act, 2013. He said that sexual harassment is termed as a violation of the fundamental rights of a woman to equality under Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution of India and right to life and to live with dignity under Article 21. Sexual harassment is also considered a violation of a right to practice any profession or to carry on any occupation or business which includes a right to a safe environment free from sexual harassment, he added.

                The composition and functioning of Internal Complaints Committee and District Complaints Committee were also discussed during the workshop. The last segment of workshop saw an interesting session of interjection where youngsters clarified their doubts.

                The workshop was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mrs. Poonam Singhal, Chairperson, Women Cell followed by presentation of mementos to the Guests. Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Dinesh Kumar appreciated the Women Cell for organising such an awareness workshop and expressed that such events should be organised in future as well.
