Delhi/Alive News: Activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam have moved the Supreme Court, challenging the Delhi High Court’s September 30 order that rejected their bail pleas for the third time in the 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case. Both are facing stringent charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) over their alleged role in orchestrating the February 2020 north-east Delhi violence.

The High Court had earlier refused to reconsider their bail applications, citing judicial discipline regarding a previous Supreme Court order. Khalid, arrested in September 2020, and Imam, arrested in August 2020, have remained incarcerated for over six years.

The case stems from the February 2020 riots, which claimed 53 lives during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). While the Supreme Court previously upheld the denial of their bail while granting relief to other co-accused, the legal battle continues as they seek liberty over prolonged detention.
