National/Alive News: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N S Raja Subramani has announced a proposed two-year service extension for Agniveers, which could increase their total tenure from four to six years. The extension will be offered to the 75% of Agniveers who are not selected for permanent service after completing their initial four-year term.
The announcement comes as the first batch of Agniveers approaches the end of its service period. General Subramani said the performance of Agniveers had received positive feedback and praised their efficiency. Around 3.18 lakh Agniveers are currently serving in the Army, Navy and Air Force.
25% Retention Rule to Continue
The Agnipath scheme was launched in June 2022. Under its existing rules, up to 25% of Agniveers from each batch can be selected for permanent service after four years. Selection is based on performance, merit and the requirements of the armed forces.
The remaining 75% were earlier required to leave after completing their four-year tenure. The proposed extension will give them an opportunity to serve for another two years and compete for regular positions through a selection process.
Those offered an extension will also receive higher pay and allowances. However, permanent recruitment is not guaranteed.
Changes in Recruitment Process
The CDS also announced changes in the recruitment process. Candidates will now appear for the written examination before the physical fitness test. Earlier, the physical test was conducted first.
Agniveers will also receive skill certificates based on their military training and work experience. These certificates are expected to help them in future employment opportunities.
The Agnipath scheme has not been scrapped. Its basic four-year structure and 25% permanent retention rule will continue, with the proposed two-year extension providing additional service opportunities.
