J&K MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi quits National Conference, accuses party of betraying people

Srinagar/Alive News: In a major setback to the ruling National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has resigned from the party and submitted his resignation from Parliament, accusing its leadership of betraying the people’s mandate and expectations.

Ruhullah made the announcement at a gathering in Budgam on the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi. His decision brings an end to his 24-year association with the National Conference.

In a four-page letter, Ruhullah accused the party of abandoning its promise to fight for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s rights after securing a massive mandate in the 2024 Assembly elections.

He said the NC had changed its political position soon after the elections and prioritised running the government over pursuing the struggle for the restoration of rights.

Referring to the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A in August 2019, Ruhullah described it as an attack on the rights of the people of Kashmir. He said he had supported the NC in the hope that it would lead a movement for their restoration.

The MP also cited differences over reservation rationalisation, political prisoners and the restoration of Article 370 as reasons behind his decision.

Ruhullah said he would continue working for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and remain committed to his principles. Sources close to him said he has no immediate plans to join another party and may instead form a youth-led collective.

His resignation from the Lok Sabha will take effect subject to its acceptance by the Speaker.
