Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket: Australia’s third-highest T20I run-scorer

Sports/Alive News: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to his career in T20 Internationals, List A and first-class cricket. However, the 38-year-old will continue playing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL).

Maxwell had already retired from One-Day Internationals in June 2025. His contract with Melbourne Stars runs until the end of the 2027-28 season. His last international appearance came against Oman in February during the T20 World Cup.

Third-highest T20I run-scorer for Australia

Maxwell scored 2,897 runs in 130 T20 Internationals, making him Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in the format. He also scored five T20I centuries, sharing the world record with India’s Rohit Sharma.

Speaking on the ‘The Final Word’ podcast, Maxwell said discussions about his international future had been ongoing for some time. He revealed that there was no pressure from the team management and that both sides had kept the possibility of his return open.

Maxwell also admitted that he had hoped to receive a farewell match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during England’s upcoming white-ball tour. However, he understood the team’s decision to focus on younger players ahead of future tournaments, including the 2028 Olympics.

Focus on fitness ahead of BBL

Maxwell said he now wants to prioritise his fitness and recovery. He underwent an eight-week rehabilitation programme following treatment for his knee, aiming to regain strength and prepare for the upcoming BBL season.

He added that managing his body would be important to ensure he could complete the remaining two seasons of his professional career.
