New Delhi/Alive News: The hunger strike by students at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University entered its 17th day on Wednesday, October 28. The students are demanding student union elections and action on other campus-related issues.
The university administration has announced that student union elections will be held within 15 days of approval of the student union constitution. However, protesting students have refused to end their agitation until a clear election timeline is announced.
Three of Five Demands Addressed
The administration has agreed to revoke suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students during the protest. It has also assured students that a committee will investigate the conduct of security personnel during the agitation.
According to the protesting students, three of their five demands have been addressed, but key issues remain unresolved. They want a clear date for approving the union constitution and a response to their demand for the chief proctor’s resignation.
No Student Union Elections Since 2006
Jamia has not held student union elections since the union was dissolved in 2006. The students want an elected body to represent their concerns and participate in decisions affecting campus life.
The university has formed a committee of seven professors to hold discussions with the students. A separate committee was also established on October 21 to prepare a draft constitution for the student union. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has demanded student representation on the drafting committee.
Campus Tensions and Police Case
Following tensions on October 24, the university shifted classes online and ordered the campus gates and library to remain closed until further notice.
The administration has alleged that protesters damaged university property, including surveillance cameras. Student groups, meanwhile, have accused university officials and security personnel of forcibly removing protesters and tents.
An FIR was also registered against Congress MPs Imran Masood and Imran Pratapgarhi and others over alleged unauthorised entry into the campus, according to police sources.
The protest continues as students seek written assurances and a definite timeline for their demands.
