Chinmay Sutar Scores Unbeaten 400 in Ranji Trophy After 78 Years, Creates History

Chinmay Sutar celebrates his unbeaten 400-run innings for Mizoram in the Ranji Trophy.

Sports/Alive News: Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar has created history by scoring an unbeaten 400 runs against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy. The 29-year-old became only the second Indian batter to score 400 runs in a first-class innings. The last time an Indian batter achieved a similar milestone was in 1948, when Maharashtra’s Bhausaheb Nimbalkar scored an unbeaten 443 against Kathiawar.

Playing in Dimapur, Sutar smashed 46 fours and seven sixes during his remarkable innings. He also moved past Prithvi Shaw’s 379 to register the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history. Mizoram declared their innings at 581/9.

189-Run Partnership for the Last Wicket

Mizoram did not have a strong start, losing opener Sahil Reza for just four runs. Lalruaizela scored 31, while Joseph Lalthankhuma managed only one run and Manendra Singh contributed 27.

Sutar came in at number three and took control of the innings. He shared a 168-run partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Jehu Anderson, who scored 69 runs off 151 balls. However, Nagaland fought back and reduced Mizoram from 314/4 to 392/9.

With one wicket remaining, Sutar found support from Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak. The pair added an unbeaten 189 runs for the 10th wicket. Chhakchhuak scored 14 runs off 76 balls, while Sutar completed his historic double century and went on to reach 400.

Sutar Achieves the Feat in His Second First-Class Match

Sutar’s achievement is even more remarkable because he was playing only his second first-class match. He moved from Mumbai to Mizoram ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season after obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association.

In his first Ranji Trophy match for Mizoram against Manipur, Sutar scored 35 runs in the first innings and 99 in the second. Although Mizoram lost that match by three wickets, his performance showed his potential.

He has also represented Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and performed well in the Mumbai T20 League. In June, he helped MSC Maratha Royals retain their title, scoring 212 runs in six innings, including two consecutive half-centuries.

Bhausaheb Nimbalkar’s 443-Run Record Remains Unbroken

Bhausaheb Nimbalkar continues to hold the record for the highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history. In December 1948, he scored an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in Pune. His innings included 49 fours and one six.

Nimbalkar was just nine runs short of Don Bradman’s then first-class world record of 452. However, the match ended controversially when Kathiawar’s captain refused to continue playing because Maharashtra had not declared its innings. The team left the field, and Nimbalkar remained unbeaten on 443.

Although Nimbalkar never played an official Test match for India, his record has stood for nearly 78 years. Sutar’s unbeaten 400 is now one of the greatest individual performances in Ranji Trophy history.
