Sports/Alive News: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has responded strongly to criticism over team selection, saying his responsibility is to make the right decisions rather than please everyone. He also stressed the importance of giving players confidence and maintaining security within the dressing room.
Gambhir made these remarks ahead of the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand in Hamilton. His comments came after criticism from fans and experts over the exclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Bhuvneshwar was included in the playing XI for the fifth match, while Sooryavanshi remained on the sidelines.
Gambhir Says His Job Is to Make the Right Decisions
Speaking to broadcasters before the match, Gambhir said, “My job is not to make everyone happy. My job is to take the right decisions, not the popular decisions.”
He added that social media discussions and outside criticism often put pressure on team management to make popular choices. However, he believes decisions should be based on what is best for Indian cricket.
Focus on Player Confidence and Dressing Room Environment
Gambhir also explained that players need confidence and support from the team management. He said India have plenty of talented players, but those who have performed consistently over a long period deserve more opportunities.
According to him, the team management is following the same approach while selecting players for the series.
Gambhir Says There Are No Dead-Rubber Matches
The India coach also made it clear that every international match is important, regardless of the series situation. He said every game provides an opportunity for players to learn, improve and develop their skills.
Gambhir added that representing the country is a privilege and players must never become complacent. He said there are no dead-rubber matches in his philosophy, and the entire dressing room follows the same thinking.
